July 2020

A Celebration to Remember!
Arba-Della Beck's Retirement Parade

On June 5, Arba-Della retired as FamilyMeans’ President. To celebrate her tenure, while complying with public health directives, we held a parade celebration. Even a pandemic could not stop the agency from demonstrating its appreciation for her 24 years of leadership! Over 70 entries participated in a parade including past and current board members, current and former staff, volunteers, and nonprofit peers. Signs conveyed greetings, well-wishes, and Arba-Della’s favorite interview question. Other memorable moments included family pets such as a hen named “Arba-Della Peck”, a Lakeview Health ambulance siren salute, tandem bicyclists, a tribute to the former Garden Tour event, and the arrival of her then week-old grandchild via stroller. While not the send-off any of us envisioned for her, she was delighted by the memorable event!

The next chapter of the agency will be led by President & CEO Jim Kroening, a 28-year agency veteran and former Director of Operations & Financial Solutions. Please read more about Jim and his new role by clicking the button below.

12th Annual Power of the Purse Finishes with Online Auction

As COVID-19 directives unfolded, it became apparent that an in-person event would not be possible. The agency pivoted to put its beloved Power of the Purse auction fundraiser online. Over 140 participants bid on 120 items including bags at various price points, gift certificates, and home décor items. While we missed gathering together, the general consensus was it was still fun to browse, bid, and donate! Thanks to all who embraced the change in format!

The success of the event was made possible by incredible in-kind donors and event sponsors:

Racial Justice

FamilyMeans has strongly advocated for equitable programming and serving as an ally to all. While there is always room for growth, we remain committed to learn more and do better for all of our clients and community members who experience marginalization. To learn more, please see the statements issued by the agency in the wake of current events.

Client Feedback

In early 2020, the agency took part in the shared insights (a.k.a. client satisfaction) process with the Listen 4 Good (L4G) organization. L4G promotes an intentional feedback cycle of design, collection, interpretation, response, and innovation. Clients are invited to share more about what shapes positive interactions with agency programs, and allows for comments to help build more client-centered offerings in the future. Over 200 national agencies participate, which is helpful to benchmark aggregate data with peer service providers. This initiative does not replace program-specific surveys, but rather allows the agency to gain high-level insights to our overall approach.
